Environmental solutions provider bolsters Asia’s sustainability goals through its GreenUp strategy
SINGAPORE, July 22, 2025 – Global ecological transformation leader Veolia has announced significant sustainability gains across Asia in 2024, saving 108 million cubic metres of water and eliminating 2.8 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions for cities and industries across the region.
The company’s impact is the result of wide-ranging initiatives in water reuse, desalination, leakage reduction, carbon capture and hazardous waste management, all deployed under Veolia’s global GreenUp strategic programme. Launched in 2024, GreenUp aims to accelerate the deployment of environmental solutions while stimulating innovation to regenerate natural resources and reduce pollution.
The 108 million m³ of freshwater conserved—enough to meet the daily water needs of over 2 million people in Asia for an entire year—highlights Veolia’s growing role in helping governments and businesses reduce environmental stress and meet national climate goals.
“Ecological transformation is our responsibility. We work to shift production and consumption patterns so economic growth aligns with environmental goals,” said Christophe Maquet, Senior Executive Vice-President for Asia Pacific at Veolia. “Our 2024 results reflect strong local partnerships and a clear focus on impact, guided by our GreenUp strategy.”
Tackling Water Scarcity and Industrial Decarbonisation
Across Asia, Veolia has supported both municipal and industrial clients to reduce their environmental footprint while increasing operational resilience.
- In China, Veolia enabled Hubei Jinkong Gas to achieve a 65% water reuse rate through ammonia-alcohol technology upgrades, while Tianjin Soda’s chemical production facility reached a 30% reuse rate. These efforts contribute directly to China’s “Dual Carbon” goals of peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
- In South Korea, Veolia partnered with Samyang Foods to cut emissions at its Wonju facility by 45%, supporting the company’s target of a 30% global emissions reduction by 2030. The work forms part of Korea’s broader decarbonisation and Green Growth ambitions.
- In India, Veolia’s patented carbon capture technology was deployed at a plant supporting the National Thermal Power Corporation, aiding efforts to reduce the carbon intensity of thermal power generation—one of the country’s most critical transition challenges.
- Across the region, Veolia operated 30 hazardous waste treatment facilities in 2024, managing over 1.2 million tonnes of industrial waste safely in countries including Greater China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and India.
Supporting National Climate Commitments
Veolia’s Scope 4 emissions savings—referring to avoided emissions through its services and technologies—totalled 2.8 million tonnes of CO₂e across Asia in 2024. These reductions support national policies such as Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, South Korea’s Carbon Neutrality Strategy, and China’s low-carbon industrial policies.
“Our focus is on delivering measurable results through scalable innovation,” said Maquet. “Looking ahead, we will continue to advance collaborative solutions that meet Asia’s environmental challenges—whether it’s water scarcity, industrial decarbonisation, or waste management.”
Long-Term Presence, Regional Commitment
With over three decades of experience in Asia and operations spanning 50 countries globally, Veolia is positioning itself as a key partner in the region’s ecological transition. Its 2024 performance underscores the value of combining local insight with global technology to meet the dual objectives of environmental responsibility and economic resilience.
The GreenUp strategy will remain central to Veolia’s operations in Asia, as the company works alongside cities, governments and businesses to co-develop solutions for a climate-positive future.
