JOHOR, MALAYSIA, November 5, 2024 – HID Malaysia, a leader in trusted identity solutions, is advancing its commitment to sustainability with the installation of a substantial solar energy system at its manufacturing hub in Kulai, Johor. This move supports HID’s parent company, ASSA ABLOY, in its ambitious goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Partnering with Solarvest, HID Malaysia’s solar project aims to reduce carbon emissions while bolstering the company’s energy independence and stability.
The Johor facility, which first opened in 2005 and expanded in 2021, spans 200,000 square feet and employs over 800 staff. It is a critical centre for HID’s research, development, and manufacturing operations in the region, supporting export sales with a diverse product portfolio that serves governments, universities, hospitals, financial institutions, and technology-driven enterprises worldwide. HID’s identity solutions are widely used to secure physical and digital spaces, enabling people to transact safely, work productively, and move freely.
Managing Director Robert Verkuijlen highlighted the environmental and operational impact of the solar installations in a recent discussion. Across its two factories, HID’s Johor site now boasts a combined solar capacity of 1,080 kWp, generating approximately 1,360 MWh of clean energy annually—equivalent to reducing 886 tons of CO₂ emissions each year. This shift toward renewable energy not only helps HID Malaysia decrease its reliance on fossil fuels but also cuts its electricity expenses by an estimated 10-12%, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable business practices.
“The solar panel installations play a pivotal role in our sustainability journey,” said Verkuijlen. “This clean energy transition allows us to align our immediate goals with ASSA ABLOY’s larger environmental objectives, including a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 and ultimately achieving net zero by 2050. It’s about building a sustainable future, not just for us but for future generations.”
The energy generated from HID’s solar panels powers a range of equipment in its production line, which manufactures secure identity components such as RFID tags and access cards. The initiative is not only environmentally beneficial but also offers HID Malaysia greater resilience against energy price fluctuations, providing stability in an unpredictable energy market.
In addition to the solar project, HID is also developing other sustainability initiatives, including plans for further solar expansion when energy demands rise. HID’s product development teams are working on sustainable design solutions, exploring materials such as bamboo to replace traditional plastics. With every new product, HID considers the environmental impact, aiming to minimise the carbon footprint of its offerings.
HID’s commitment to sustainability is evident across its operations, reflecting the global values of its parent company, ASSA ABLOY. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, HID operates with over 4,500 employees worldwide and supports trusted identities in more than 100 countries. HID’s solutions are used by millions globally across sectors like healthcare, finance, and government, connecting people to safe, productive, and efficient environments. By leveraging renewable energy and sustainable design, HID Malaysia is setting a powerful example for eco-conscious manufacturing practices in the Asia-Pacific region.
With each green initiative, HID strengthens its role as an environmental leader within the identity solutions industry, underscoring that responsible, sustainable business practices are essential to meeting the challenges of the future.
